Engaging in the experience to make and provide products, the Life Skills class creates dog treats to test and sell for the community.
Looking for fun ways to help students participate, Mrs. Cathy Wilt (staff) developed an interactive way for her kids to get involved with the process of culinary and social skills, starting with dog treats. Involving students in the process from start to finish, she encourages them to take action by proposing their opinions and finding the problems and solutions with the treats.
“Students are involved in the entire process, from research and development of trialing flavors and picking recipes, to grocery lists for supplies, breaking down costs, determining pricing, creating an order form, making and packing the treats, and delivery,” Wilt said.
In hopes of reaching the school and the district and expanding the selection from only dog treats, the class, hoping to slowly endorse making cat and rabbit treats, think about their next step to take. Currently, as they go through trial and error with the dog treats, the class will take their knowledge into different recipes. Students will continue to socialize and learn the process of selling and counting profits from their sales.
“This has been very exciting learning what products and equipment to use for making the treats,” Jessica Ash said.
Keeping the kids engaged, students will continue to work on the treats three to four times a week. As of right now, this will be including ten treats for $4.00 a bag. The current flavors available are oats and applesauce, as well as peanut butter. Taking orders every two weeks, you can pick up an order form at room 122, email Mrs. Wilt at [email protected], or fill out the Teacher’s Pets Order Form. All proceeds will go towards learning activities for the special education class.
