Continuing a tradition that began in 1989, Mr. John Lum, a dedicated faculty member and EF Educational Tours Representative at James Buchanan High School (JBHS), led yet another unforgettable international adventure—this time to Australia.

Joining Mr. Lum on the trip were fellow faculty members Ms. Danielle Simchick and Ms. Jenna Sheaffer, along with students Kimberly Stup and Ethan Izer (both recent graduates), and senior Megan Miller.

For nearly three decades, Mr. Lum has planned and guided educational trips around the world. Since 2001, these enriching journeys have become an annual tradition, offering students and staff the chance to explore new cultures and landscapes firsthand.

Their Australian adventure began at James Buchanan High School, where the group departed for Ronald Reagan National Airport. After a series of flights, they finally landed in Brisbane—over 31 hours later.

The first stop on their itinerary was Fraser Island, located north of Brisbane along the eastern coastline. The group stayed at a unique Treehouse Resort, which Mr. Lum described as “like being in Jurassic Park.” Fraser Island, the world’s largest sand island, offered a rare glimpse into Australia’s wildlife, including native dingoes.

“I saw dingoes in their natural habitat!” said Miller, clearly excited by the experience.

“People often ask me about the most beautiful place I’ve been—Fraser Island is right up there,” Lum added.

After three days on Fraser Island, the group continued their journey south along the coast. They passed through scenic spots like Noosa Heads and the Glass House Mountains before arriving at Surfer’s Paradise, where they spent two days enjoying the vibrant beachside city.

Their final destination was Sydney, where the students had the chance to experience iconic sights such as the Sydney Tower Eye and the Sydney Harbour Bridge. A boat ride through Sydney Harbour was a highlight for Miller.

“We went on a boat ride there in Sydney Harbour,” she said, reflecting on her favorite memory.

In addition to the breathtaking views and exciting activities, there was plenty of time for souvenirs. “I got four boomerangs and a bunch of clothes,” Miller laughed.

The Australia trip was just one of many global adventures organized by Mr. Lum over the years. For students interested in travel, there’s good news—Mr. Lum’s next trip is already in the works, with Costa Rica as the upcoming destination.

If you’re a student at JBHS with a sense of adventure, this could be your next great journey.
