The tennis season is short, but the girls’ team at James Buchanan High School has made the most of it. Despite facing ups and downs throughout the season, they’ve held their ground, ending with a record of 8 wins and 7 losses.

The team consists of 14 players, but only 7 compete in Varsity matches. In high school tennis, each match involves five individual contests—three singles players and two doubles teams—which contribute to the overall score.

Among the team, one player has particularly stood out: Amber Clark. Now in her junior year, Amber has demonstrated exceptional dedication and focus, losing only one match this entire season. Playing at the number three singles spot, she has steadily climbed her way to the top since her freshman year.

“I feel like I’m a lot more focused with tennis than I used to be,” Amber reflects on her growth.

This heightened concentration has played a key role in her improvement. From competing on junior varsity in ninth grade to becoming a key singles player in her sophomore and junior years, Amber’s determination has been clear. She’s a perfect example of hard work paying off.

Reflecting on the difference between playing singles and doubles, Amber explains, “Obviously, when you’re playing singles, everything’s on you to get everything right. There’s a little more pressure when you don’t have someone there to help, but I kind of like the freedom of being by myself, and playing the way I want to.”

For Amber, this independence has been a key factor in her success this season. She’s exceeded her expectations for herself, especially considering her initial doubts about competing in singles. “I thought getting into singles would be tougher than doubles, and it is, but I didn’t think I’d be more successful at singles than I was at doubles,” she admits.

Amber has cherished her time on the team, appreciating not only her personal growth but the support of her teammates and coach.

“I feel blessed to have the season that I’m having, and to have the teammates and coach I do. It’s been a great experience,” she says.

As the season draws to a close, Amber and her teammates are gearing up for the Mid-Penn tournament, which will take place on October 5th, 6th, and 9th. The team will compete against others in their division, with hopes of finishing strong and proving they are the best.
