FRANCONIA, VA — A McDonald’s on Franconia Road in Fairfax County has sparked major attention after implementing a strict new rule: no one under 21 is allowed to dine inside.
A sign placed at the entrance states, “Due to repeated incidents of student violence, this McDonald’s location is temporarily closed for dine-in service to anyone under 21 years of age. This decision was made to protect our staff, our guests, and our community.”
Adults must now ring a doorbell to be granted entry. Meanwhile, drive-thru and mobile ordering remain open to all ages.
The restaurant, located near several Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS), is a frequent hangout for students during lunch and after school hours. The policy change appears to have started earlier this week, though it’s not yet known how long it will stay in place.
A photo of the posted sign was shared with the media, showing it clearly visible at the restaurant’s entrance.
Owner and School Officials Respond
In a statement to The Rocket Flame, the owner and operator of the Franconia McDonald’s said:
“We love being part of the Edison community and we value each and every customer. We’ve enhanced our Franconia Road McDonald’s security measures in an effort to promote a safe environment for our customers and staff. This policy was developed in partnership with local school officials with oversight from local law enforcement. This serves as a temporary fix as we work towards a long-term solution for all. We thank our community for its support, understanding and patience.”
Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) also weighed in. On Friday, FCPS officials shared the owner’s message with students at Edison High School and advised parents to speak with their children about behavior expectations in public spaces.
They added that students who leave school without parental permission during the day will receive an “unexcused absence.”
