Huntingdon County, PA – A woman’s right to open carry likely saved her life after a violent confrontation with her ex-boyfriend turned dangerous. According to Pennsylvania State Police, the woman used her legally carried pistol to fire a warning shot that forced the man to flee.
The incident occurred on Saturday, May 10, when 31-year-old Ryan Timothy Rogers allegedly arrived at the woman’s residence and began banging on her front door. When she refused to come outside, Rogers reportedly smashed her car windows and forced his way into her home.
While on the phone with emergency services, the woman said Rogers attempted to grab her phone during the altercation. In the struggle, she retrieved her open carry firearm and fired a warning shot into the ceiling, which successfully forced Rogers to retreat. However, he had already taken her phone.
The woman then drove to a relative’s home where she called 911.
Authorities quickly arrested Rogers and charged him with robbery, simple assault, theft, and criminal mischief. He is currently being held in Huntingdon County Prison on a $100,000 bond. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 21.
This case highlights the importance of responsible firearm ownership and the role that open carry laws can play in self-defense situations.
