Father Arrested for Leaving Young Children in Car While Intoxicated at Tobacco Shop

A father has been arrested after allegedly leaving his two young children unattended in a car while he played skills games at a local tobacco shop. The incident occurred over the weekend, and the father, Kevin Holmes, was found intoxicated during the investigation.

Kevin Holmes, 43, was charged on May 3 with several offenses, including endangering the welfare of children, DUI, reckless driving, and leaving children unattended in a vehicle.

What Happened?

Police responded to a call from a bystander reporting that two children, aged seven and five, were left alone in a car outside Puff SuperValue on 31st Street in Altoona. Upon arrival, officers found the children without safety restraints or child seats, and they told authorities their father had entered the store.

A witness who saw Holmes go into the store informed police that the father did not merely buy cigarettes but was playing skills games inside. Holmes later admitted to only being inside for a “minute,” but authorities noted his suspicious behavior.

Further Investigation and DUI Arrest

As police continued their investigation, they discovered Holmes had an active warrant out of Centre County. Upon speaking with him, officers noticed the strong smell of alcohol on his breath. Holmes failed field sobriety tests and agreed to a breathalyzer test, which confirmed his intoxication. A blood test later supported these findings.

In addition to his DUI charges, Holmes was found to have a suspended license and expired vehicle registration and inspections.

Holmes’ Arrest and Upcoming Hearing

Holmes was placed in Blair County Prison with bail set at $75,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for May 14.

This case highlights the dangers of leaving children unattended in vehicles, especially while intoxicated. Authorities urge parents and caregivers to prioritize safety at all times.
