A shocking discovery has been made in Suffolk County, New York, where a 75-year-old man, Stephen Glantz, has been charged with animal cruelty after nearly 100 cats were found in his home, including dozens of dead kittens stored in his freezer.
Glantz turned himself into authorities on Wednesday after an investigation revealed the horrifying conditions inside his home. The Suffolk County Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) reported that Glantz is facing 18 misdemeanor counts of animal cruelty and neglect.
A Deplorable Living Situation
The home, located about 50 miles east of Manhattan, was condemned by the Islip Fire Marshal due to its uninhabitable state. Police officers who entered the residence described the overwhelming stench of urine and feces throughout the house. Inside, 69 live cats were found, many suffering from severe medical issues such as respiratory infections and eye diseases. Tragically, 28 cats were discovered dead within the property.
The conditions inside the home were alarming. Authorities found the floors, walls, and stairs covered in grime, wet urine, and smeared feces. The smell of ammonia from the urine was so strong that it contributed to the house’s condemnation.
A Disturbing Discovery in the Freezer
In a further disturbing revelation, authorities found approximately 24 dead kittens wrapped together in Glantz’s freezer. Three of the living cats had to be euthanized due to their suffering. The SPCA described the living cats’ conditions as “alarming” with “filth covering every surface.”
Rescue Efforts and Adoption Plans
The surviving cats are receiving medical treatment and care at the Islip Town Animal Shelter, assisted by the SPCA’s mobile animal hospital. Local officials are working to find new homes for these cats, with more than two dozen being transported to upstate New York for adoption. The shelter is also seeking donations to help cover the costs of medical care and housing for the rescued animals.
Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk County SPCA, said that the house was in “absolute deplorable condition.” He also confirmed that Glantz’s wife passed away a month prior to the discovery, and the couple had lived in the home for over 30 years. Authorities are still investigating why Glantz kept such a large number of cats under these conditions.
Animal Cruelty Awareness and Prevention
This case highlights the importance of reporting animal cruelty and ensuring that proper care is provided to pets. The SPCA is urging the public to remain vigilant and report any instances of neglect or abuse to authorities.
For those interested in helping the cats or adopting one of the rescued animals, the SPCA and local shelters are accepting donations and applications for adoption.
