Cleveland-Cliffs to Lay Off Over 500 Workers at Steelton Facility in June

More than 500 workers at Cleveland-Cliffs’ rail manufacturing facility in Steelton, Pennsylvania, are set to lose their jobs next month.

According to a WARN (Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification) notice filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Labor & Industry, Cleveland-Cliffs will temporarily idle the plant located at 215 S. Front St., Steelton. The company referred to the move as an “indefinite idle,” meaning there is currently no clear plan to restart operations.

This plant is one of six facilities nationwide that Cleveland-Cliffs plans to either partially or fully idle in a broader cost-cutting effort.

The Steelton facility has a long history of steel production and has recently been a symbol of American-made steel supporting U.S. infrastructure. Last year, U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro toured the plant, emphasizing the importance of American workers in building national infrastructure.

Despite these past recognitions, economic pressures have pushed Cleveland-Cliffs to make hard decisions about its operations.

The layoffs are expected to begin in June 2025.
