HARRISBURG, Pa. — Global shipping giant UPS has announced plans to close three of its facilities in Pennsylvania as part of a sweeping nationwide overhaul aimed at modernizing its operations.

The closures come as part of UPS’s “network of the future” initiative, first introduced in 2024. This strategic reconfiguration is designed to streamline the company’s vast network of distribution centers through increased automation and efficiency.

In a statement, UPS confirmed that by the end of 2025, it expects to reduce its workforce by approximately 20,000 jobs nationwide. The company has also revealed plans to shut down 73 facilities—a mix of leased and owned properties—across the U.S. by June 2025.

Three UPS Facilities in Pennsylvania to Close

UPS has identified three Pennsylvania locations that will cease operations in the coming weeks:

  • 1821 South 19th Street, Harrisburg, PA
  • 2006 River Road, New Kensington, PA
  • 2129 Rockdale Lane, Stroudsburg, PA

While an exact number of affected workers in Pennsylvania has not been released, a UPS spokesperson said efforts are underway to relocate employees impacted by the closures into new roles within the company.

Major Savings and Modernization

According to UPS’s Q1 2025 earnings report, the restructuring plan is expected to save the company an estimated $3.5 billion. Despite the facility closures and job cuts, UPS says it remains committed to delivering high-quality service to customers in over 200 countries and territories.

“We are executing the largest network reconfiguration in UPS history. This initiative will align our capacity with future volume demands and increase productivity through automation,” the company said in its statement.

Continued Commitment to Customers

UPS emphasized that although its physical footprint is changing, its dedication to reliable pickup and delivery services remains strong.
