Smoking isn’t just harmful to your health—it’s also burning a hole in Pennsylvanians’ wallets. A new report from WalletHub reveals just how expensive the habit really is in the Keystone State.
According to WalletHub’s findings, the average smoker in Pennsylvania spends about $4,022 annually on cigarettes. Over a lifetime, that adds up to a staggering $193,070.
The report, titled The Real Cost of Smoking by State, ranked Pennsylvania 15th in the nation for the highest financial impact of smoking. The ranking is based on cigarette prices and associated health and productivity costs.
Right now, a single pack of cigarettes in Pennsylvania costs around $11.02. Multiply that by 365 days a year, and the financial toll quickly adds up.
In addition to the cost of cigarettes, smoking leads to healthcare expenses. On average, tobacco-related medical costs in Pennsylvania come to about $3,989 per year, or $191,452 over a lifetime.
Smoking also causes lost income due to missed work, workplace discrimination, and reduced productivity. These indirect costs further increase the total financial burden on smokers.
Quitting smoking can be one of the best ways to improve both health and financial well-being. For Pennsylvanians looking to make a change, understanding the true cost is the first step.
