Rite Aid, one of America’s largest pharmacy chains, is preparing for a new round of store closures after filing for bankruptcy for the second time.
The pharmacy giant, once headquartered in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, filed its latest bankruptcy case earlier this week. According to court documents, dozens of Rite Aid locations are slated for closure, and the company is gearing up to sell hundreds more.
Store Closures Coming Soon
A&G Real Estate Partners, the firm overseeing the sale, announced that 1,187 retail leases and 50 company-owned properties across 15 states are up for sale. The sales and auctions are expected to begin this May, pending court approval.
Closures Across Nine States
The first 47 Rite Aid stores listed for closure span across California, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania, and Washington.
Among the California closures are stores in Santa Monica, Los Angeles, Long Beach, San Diego, and San Jose. Pennsylvania, the company’s home state, will also see closures in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg, and Kutztown, among others.

Employee Layoffs Begin
In a letter to employees, Rite Aid CEO Matthew Schroeder confirmed that layoffs began Monday, affecting the Valley Green Office Facility in Etters and the Collaboration Center in Philadelphia.
Schroeder noted that Rite Aid tried to secure funding and negotiate with lenders but was unsuccessful. He expressed regret for the short notice, saying the company informed employees “as soon as practicable.”
What’s Next?
The closures and asset sales are still pending court approval. Rite Aid has stated that stores will continue to operate as they work to transfer prescriptions to other pharmacies.
