Rep. Elise Stefanik, R-N.Y., sharply questioned Haverford College President Wendy Raymond during a congressional hearing in Washington, D.C., over the school’s response to antisemitism.

Stefanik focused on whether Haverford took any disciplinary action against a student group accused of antisemitism following Hamas’ attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.

President Raymond called the group’s statements “repugnant” and “indefensible” but did not clarify if any discipline had been issued.

Stefanik pushed for a clear answer, asking if there were suspensions or expulsions. Raymond avoided specifics, prompting Stefanik to press again: “Was there any disciplinary action taken?”

Eventually, Raymond acknowledged, “Yes, there have been some,” without detailing the type or target of the actions.

The hearing also touched on a math professor at Haverford who allegedly posted antisemitic content online. Stefanik asked if the college investigated or disciplined the professor.

Raymond declined to answer, citing a policy against discussing individual cases.

Stefanik warned Raymond about the consequences of avoiding direct answers. She noted that other university leaders had lost their positions after failing to respond clearly in similar hearings.

This wasn’t Stefanik’s first time confronting university leaders over antisemitism. In December 2023, she grilled the presidents of Harvard and the University of Pennsylvania on whether calls for genocide against Jews violate school policies.

Harvard’s then-president Claudine Gay responded vaguely, saying such speech “can be” against the rules depending on context. Penn’s President Liz Magill also gave noncommittal answers.

Following intense backlash, both Gay and Magill resigned shortly after their testimony went viral online.

Stefanik continues to spotlight what she sees as a lack of accountability from colleges regarding antisemitic conduct on campus.
