Tick Season is Back in Pennsylvania

Tick season has officially started in Pennsylvania, and the state’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) is urging people to stay alert.

Staying Safe on Trails
At Ridley Creek State Park, John Gillespie and his friend Nancy are taking extra steps to avoid ticks. John wears a hat and uses insect repellent whenever he heads out for a walk.

Tiny Ticks, Big Risk
Deer ticks are especially concerning. They’re tiny and easy to miss, making them more dangerous. “They’re real hard to find,” said West Chester resident John Spangler.

A Common Threat
Deer ticks are among the five most common ticks in Pennsylvania. They’re the ones the DEP is most focused on this season.

Watch for Juvenile Ticks
Christian Boyer, a DEP tick surveillance supervisor, says the state is now monitoring juvenile blacklegged ticks. These young ticks can carry Lyme disease.

High Lyme Risk in PA
Pennsylvania often reports the highest number of Lyme disease cases in the country due to its large tick population.

How to Avoid Ticks
To stay safe, the DEP advises people to walk in the center of trails and avoid brushing up against low or edge vegetation where ticks may be hiding.

Don’t Stop Enjoying Nature
Despite the risk, hikers like John and Nancy still love getting outside. “It’s a beautiful walk in the trees,” John shared.

Protect Yourself
Wear long sleeves and pants when in wooded areas. Tuck in your shirt to reduce exposed skin. Taking a few precautions can help you enjoy the outdoors safely.
