A New Mexico teenager, Sheliky Sanchez, 18, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder after allegedly shooting an Uber driver, Joseph Andrus, 51, during a late-night road rage incident.
Sanchez admitted to police that he killed Andrus in an attempt to “let off steam” due to “so much stress,” calling the act a form of relief, likening it to “taking an in and out breath.”
The tragic incident occurred early on the morning of August 7, 2025, and Sanchez is now facing serious charges, including armed robbery and tampering with evidence.
According to police reports, Sanchez confessed to having planned the murder, targeting anyone he could find after deciding not to take his frustration out on “certain people.”
Disturbing Details of the Crime
Sanchez allegedly enlisted the help of his girlfriend to order an Uber for him, with the intention of using the ride as an opportunity to shoot someone. According to the criminal complaint, Sanchez had his girlfriend use her Uber account to book the ride, telling her he was going to borrow a car from a friend but had violent plans instead.
Once the Uber arrived, Sanchez got into the car driven by Andrus. During the ride, Sanchez reportedly told police that Andrus “was actually really cool” and had a conversation with him.
However, when they arrived at the drop-off point, Sanchez became impatient and allegedly shot Andrus multiple times when he took “too long” to get out of the car. Sanchez then shot Andrus again as he lay on the ground, allegedly stealing the vehicle before fleeing the scene.
The Aftermath and Sanchez’s Confession
After the shooting, Sanchez and his girlfriend drove to a McDonald’s and got frappes before going to a nearby park, where they removed the license plate from the stolen vehicle.
Sanchez later told police that he felt bad for Andrus but was relieved after the act, saying, “getting that satisfaction out, out of the way, it’s like a relief.”
During his interrogation, Sanchez told authorities that he specifically ordered the Uber to shoot the driver, not to steal the car, though he also admitted to taking the car afterward. He reportedly said that Andrus “seemed like a good guy,” but he “doesn’t really go for good people.”

Joseph Andrus’ family and the community have expressed their grief following his tragic death. His mother stated, “Joseph is so very loved. He is a light in this world that can’t be dimmed,” expressing deep appreciation for the Albuquerque Police Department’s efforts in bringing Sanchez to justice.
Andrew Hasbun, Uber’s head of safety communications, expressed shock and heartbreak over the senseless attack. “We are shocked and heartbroken for Joseph’s family and loved ones after this senseless attack,” he said, while also thanking law enforcement for their swift response.
