Chance the Rapper is hitting the road for his much-anticipated tour, just days before the release of his upcoming album, Star Line.
The 32-year-old Grammy-winning artist announced his And We Back Tour on Monday, August 11, set to promote the album, which will officially drop on Friday, August 15. Fans will be able to purchase tickets for the tour starting on Tuesday, August 12.
The tour will see Chance performing in 15 cities across North America, starting in Houston on Friday, September 26. The rapper will also make stops in major cities like New Orleans, New York City, Toronto, Los Angeles, and his hometown of Chicago, among others.
Chance’s First Album Since 2019’s The Big Day
Star Line marks Chance the Rapper’s first full-length album since the release of The Big Day in 2019. According to the official press release, the new album reflects Chance’s global journey, both artistically, spiritually, and physically, over the past six years.
The album blends genres like hip-hop, soul, and experimental sounds, with lyrics that meditate on themes of identity, resilience, and legacy.
Chance’s recent travels around the globe, including trips to Ghana, have deeply influenced his sound. He mentioned in an interview that Star Line is rooted in his connection to Chicago and Black culture across the diaspora, while incorporating international influences from his travels.
Lead Single “Tree” and Its Deep Meaning
Chance’s lead single from Star Line, “Tree,” was released on Thursday, July 3, and is a collaboration with Lil Wayne and Smino. The song debuted at the Lyrical Lemonade Smash event in Bridgeview, Illinois, on Sunday, June 22.
While on the surface, “Tree” may seem like a casual song about weed, Chance revealed in an interview with Rolling Stone that it carries a much deeper meaning. The song uses the cannabis industry as a metaphor for inequities in agriculture, particularly highlighting the struggles that Black farmers have faced in the United States.
According to Chance, “Tree” is not just about marijuana but also serves as commentary on the larger systemic issues that affect the Black community in various industries.
“Black folks don’t really own any means of production in a lot of industries, but Black farmers have always had it the toughest in America,” Chance said. “The song is very expressive and uncensored, but still fun, still inclusive.”
Personal Experiences Shaping Star Line
Chance has said that Star Line draws from his personal life and experiences, particularly the divorce from his ex-wife, Kirsten Corley, and his travels across the globe. In the years since The Big Day, Chance has undergone significant changes in his personal life, and these shifts are reflected in his new music.
“Going to Ghana, reconnecting with a lot of my family, going through relationships changing, getting divorced — there’s a lot of things that happened between my last project and this day,” he shared.
Incorporating regional sounds into the album, Chance noted that the production draws from Black music that influenced him throughout his childhood, as well as international sounds inspired by his travels.
