Southeast Louisiana Storm Alert: Heavy Rain and Strong Winds Continue Even After Warning Ends

Baton Rouge, Louisiana – Although the severe thunderstorm warning for the Baton Rouge area has officially expired, weather conditions across southeast Louisiana remain unsettled, with heavy rainfall and gusty winds expected to continue through the night.

Storm Weakens but Still Brings Threats

The National Weather Service (NWS) in New Orleans confirmed that the Severe Thunderstorm Warning, which had been in effect for Ascension, West Baton Rouge, Iberville, and East Baton Rouge parishes, ended at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

However, the storm system still has enough strength to cause localized flooding, wind damage, and commute delays.

Even though it no longer meets severe criteria, the storm is still active. The main concerns now are:

Strong wind gusts

Heavy downpours

Flooding in low-lying areas

Travel Advisory for Evening Commuters

Motorists are being warned about hazardous travel conditions tonight, especially along Interstate 10 (I-10) and LA-30, where rainfall may cause waterlogging in areas with poor drainage. Commuters are advised to:

Avoid driving through flooded roads

Use headlights in heavy rain

Stay alert for downed trees or power lines

If you spot any dangerous conditions, report them to local authorities instead of trying to fix them yourself.

Risk of Severe Weather Now Low—but Not Over

The risk of hail or tornadoes has now diminished, according to forecasters. Still, unstable weather patterns may stick around into early Friday morning, particularly in the southern parts of East Baton Rouge Parish.

Emergency management officials remind residents to remain weather-aware overnight, especially in areas prone to waterlogging or poor drainage.

While the worst of the storm may have passed, southeast Louisiana isn’t entirely in the clear just yet. Heavy rain and strong winds remain a concern for residents through the night.

Everyone is encouraged to stay indoors, keep an eye on local weather updates, and avoid driving unless necessary. The situation is being closely monitored by the National Weather Service and local emergency teams.
