The Los Angeles Rams have been downplaying the severity of Matthew Stafford’s ongoing absence from training camp, but recent reports indicate the veteran quarterback is dealing with more than just “soreness” in his back.
Stafford, who is recovering from an aggravated disc, has been receiving epidural injections to aid his recovery, leaving the Rams with a pressing question about his availability for the 2025 season.
With the Rams eyeing a Week 1 start against the Houston Texans, Stafford’s availability remains uncertain, especially as he has battled multiple injuries in recent years, leading to speculation about retirement.
While the Rams are hopeful Stafford will be ready for the season opener, his ability to stay on the field long-term remains a concern.
Rams’ Backup QB Options
Should Stafford miss significant time, the Rams are not completely unprepared. Backup quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, widely regarded as one of the best No. 2 quarterbacks in the NFL, brings significant starting experience and postseason success.
However, the Rams may need additional depth behind Garoppolo, especially considering the severity of Stafford’s back issue. Here are a few emergency quarterbacks the Rams could consider:
1. Carson Wentz (Free Agent)
Carson Wentz remains one of the most high-profile free agent quarterbacks available. The former Philadelphia Eagles star, who spent last season as a backup with the Kansas City Chiefs, is familiar with Rams head coach Sean McVay’s system.
In fact, Wentz even served as Stafford’s emergency backup in 2023 and earned three touchdowns in a spot start. While his recent career has been erratic, Wentz’s physical traits and potential for explosive plays make him an intriguing option for the Rams if they need a short-term rental.
2. Taylor Heinicke (Chargers)
Heinicke, currently the most experienced backup for Justin Herbert with the Los Angeles Chargers, could become available after the Chargers added Trey Lance to their quarterback room. Heinicke, who has 30 career starts and a playoff run under his belt, could provide the Rams with a scrappy and reliable option.
Having worked with current Rams quarterbacks coach Dave Ragone in Atlanta, Heinicke would bring both experience and familiarity to McVay’s offense.
3. John Wolford (Jaguars)
John Wolford, a familiar name to Rams fans, has bounced around the league but has history with McVay. Wolford started for the Rams during the 2020 season, including a playoff game when Jared Goff was sidelined.
Though his career has not seen extensive playing time, Wolford’s connection to McVay and his ability to step in under pressure could make him an emergency option for L.A., especially if he struggles to earn a spot with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
4. Kirk Cousins (Falcons)
While it seems unlikely the Rams would trade for Kirk Cousins while Stafford is still capable of playing, the connection between Cousins and McVay makes this a “break glass in case of emergency” scenario.
Cousins’ timing-based, play-action style would fit well in McVay’s system, and the two previously worked together in Washington. However, with Stafford’s recovery, the Rams are likely to pass on Cousins unless Stafford’s condition worsens.
Stafford’s Long-Term Health Concerns
Matthew Stafford’s battle with back injuries, including a spinal cord contusion in 2022, raises questions about his ability to stay healthy for the entire season.
The 37-year-old quarterback has been receiving treatment for his aggravated disc and is expected to return for Week 1, but whether he can remain on the field throughout the season is still uncertain.
The Rams’ decision to keep Stafford in the fold despite his injury history shows their belief in his leadership, but they may need to prepare for the worst if Stafford’s condition doesn’t improve. As the season approaches, the Rams’ quarterback depth will be one of the most critical aspects of their 2025 roster.
