Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins’ quarterback, recently expressed uncertainty about how he was selected for President Donald Trump’s council on sports, fitness, and nutrition.
When Trump signed the executive order to create the council, he included notable athletes like Tagovailoa, NFL stars Saquon Barkley and Nick Bosa, as well as NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.
Tagovailoa’s Reaction to the Appointment
Tagovailoa, 25, shared that he wasn’t entirely sure how he landed the position but found it to be an honor nonetheless. “I think it’s pretty cool,” Tagovailoa said during a press conference on Wednesday. “It’s an honor. I would say I don’t know too much about it, but again I think that’s an honor.”
When asked about the specifics of his appointment, he humorously responded, “I should ask you that same question too, bro. How did that all develop? I’m not too sure.” Tagovailoa also did an impression of Trump, who had mispronounced his last name but still praised him as “fantastic” when healthy.
Tagovailoa seemed unfazed by the mix-up, adding that he had heard worse mispronunciations during his time at Alabama.
Other NFL Players Question Their Inclusion
Tagovailoa wasn’t the only NFL player to express surprise over being appointed to the council. Saquon Barkley, the New York Giants’ running back, also questioned his inclusion and ultimately declined the invitation. Barkley told ESPN that he was “a little shocked” when his name was brought up.
He explained that he had been busy and, after discussing it with his family, they decided it would be best to not accept the appointment.
The Purpose of the Council
The council was established to revive the Presidential Fitness Test and promote physical activity to combat childhood chronic diseases. It’s part of the Trump administration’s broader goal to encourage healthy, active lifestyles for future generations.
The council includes several former athletes, including NFL legends Lawrence Taylor and Tony Romo, as well as Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker.
Though some players have questioned their role on the council, both Tagovailoa and Barkley seem to have accepted the honor, even if they’re not entirely sure of the council’s purpose or how they got there.
