A 51-year-old woman in Salisbury, Maryland, has been arrested after she allegedly started a fire at a man’s home over a $7 debt. The incident, which occurred on July 3, led to charges including arson and malicious burning.
The Incident
Janice Oney, from Salisbury, is accused of intentionally setting fire to the front door of a man’s home after he allegedly owed her $7. According to authorities, the man, who lived on the 300 block of Penn Street, had known Oney for several years.
The two reportedly argued when Oney demanded the money. After the disagreement, she left but returned shortly after with a bottle of gasoline.
Oney allegedly used the gasoline to set the front door of the home on fire before fleeing the scene on a bicycle. The fire was quickly extinguished by the man, and by the time authorities from the Office of the State Fire Marshal and Salisbury Fire Department arrived, the damage was minimal.
Investigation and Arrest
Despite the fire being contained, investigators were able to piece together evidence linking Oney to the crime. The resident’s account, along with surveillance footage from nearby businesses, helped confirm that Oney was responsible for starting the fire.
On August 1, Oney was arrested and charged with first and second-degree arson, malicious burning, reckless endangerment, malicious destruction of property, and theft of less than $100. The theft charge is a misdemeanor, and the other charges are felonies.
Oney was granted a $25,000 unsecured personal bond, which she posted. She remains scheduled for a preliminary court hearing on August 28.
Legal Proceedings and Bail
Oney is currently being held at the Wicomico County Detention Center. The charges against her carry significant penalties, particularly the arson charges, which could result in severe legal consequences if she is convicted.
