A 28-year-old man in Louisville, Kentucky, has been arrested for allegedly shooting his girlfriend’s ex-husband after the two men coincidentally ran into each other at a local restaurant. The incident has led to multiple felony charges, including assault and wanton endangerment.
Shooting Incident and Arrest
Carlos Garcia-Romero was arrested over the weekend and charged with two counts of second-degree assault, one count of first-degree wanton endangerment, and other firearm-related offenses.
According to the Louisville Metro Police Department, officers responded to a shooting report on Sunday evening at a restaurant located near Iroquois Park, on New Cut Road.
Upon arrival, officers found the victim, an adult male, who had suffered a gunshot wound to his left leg. Emergency responders transported the victim to the University of Louisville Hospital, where he later identified Garcia-Romero as his shooter.
The victim, who is the ex-husband of Garcia-Romero’s girlfriend, explained that the two men ran into each other “coincidentally” while at the restaurant.
Alleged Incident Details
According to reports, the encounter between the two men quickly escalated. After seeing each other, Garcia-Romero allegedly pulled out a firearm, pointed it at the victim, and the gun discharged. Garcia-Romero reportedly told police that he only intended to scare the victim, claiming that the gun “accidentally went off” while he was pointing it at him.
After the shooting, Garcia-Romero allegedly fled the scene and disposed of the weapon by throwing it into a dumpster at a nearby gas station. Investigators later confirmed that Garcia-Romero and the victim share a child through his girlfriend.
Charges and Legal Proceedings
In addition to the assault and endangerment charges, Garcia-Romero is facing charges of discharging a firearm across a public road, unlawfully carrying a concealed weapon, and fleeing from police. He was taken into custody and is being held at the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections with a bond set at $50,000.
Garcia-Romero is scheduled for an arraignment on August 12. The incident raises concerns about gun safety and the consequences of escalating conflicts, especially involving people who share close personal connections.
