Oklahoma Man Arrested for Slashing Woman's Throat in Unprovoked Attack on City Bus

A 42-year-old man, Robert J. Rhoades, has been arrested in Tulsa, Oklahoma, after he allegedly slashed the throat of a 43-year-old woman in an unprovoked attack while both were riding a city bus. The incident, described by authorities as violent and senseless, occurred on the afternoon of Sunday, July 28, 2024.

Details of the Attack

The attack occurred at 1:09 p.m. when both Rhoades and the victim boarded the bus at the Walmart stop near 81st and Lewis. Witnesses, including the bus driver, reported that Rhoades sat directly behind the woman. There were no prior interactions or verbal exchanges between the two before the violent assault took place.

As the bus approached the main station, Rhoades allegedly reached around the woman and sliced her throat before quickly exiting the bus. The attack left visible blood on the victim, who was immediately rushed to a local hospital.

The severity of her injuries prompted the Homicide Unit of the Tulsa Police Department to become involved in the investigation, despite the fact that the victim survived the assault.

Rhoades’ Arrest

After the attack, witnesses provided police with a description of the suspect and his direction of travel. Officers on bicycles patrolling the area quickly located Rhoades at 100 S. Denver Avenue, where he was taken into custody without further incident.

Police noted that Rhoades had blood on his clothing, and a bloody knife was found in his pocket during a search.

Victim’s Condition

The victim was immediately taken to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery for her throat injuries. Doctors have stated that she is stable and that they are hopeful she will make a full recovery, though her injuries were described as severe. Authorities are also waiting for security footage from the bus to aid in the investigation.

Additional Charges

In addition to the assault with a deadly weapon charge, Rhoades is facing a false impersonation charge. It was also revealed that Rhoades is wanted for fugitive charges out of Missouri, adding to his criminal history. He is being held at the Tulsa County Jail without bond.

Investigation Ongoing

As investigators continue to look into the details of the attack, they are reviewing the security footage and speaking to additional witnesses. The police department emphasized the unprovoked nature of the crime and the randomness of the attack, making it all the more unsettling for the community.

Rhoades is currently in custody and awaiting his court appearance. His first court date has not yet been set.
