The long-awaited King of the Hill revival has returned with fresh episodes, laughter, and familiar characters—but also with a powerful and emotional tribute to late voice actor Jonathan Joss, who tragically passed away just over two months ago.
At the end of season 14’s finale, which premiered on August 4 on Hulu, the show honored Joss with an onscreen dedication, reminding fans of his important role in the animated series and the lasting legacy he leaves behind.
A Fitting Farewell: “In Loving Memory… JONATHAN JOSS”
The final moments of King of the Hill season 14, episode 10, featured a touching tribute:
“In Loving Memory… JONATHAN JOSS”
The text appeared alongside two images—one of his beloved character John Redcorn, and the other of Joss himself holding a dog, offering fans a warm and personal goodbye.
The tribute comes as part of the show’s revival, 15 years after the original series ended. Joss had voiced John Redcorn from season 3 onwards, taking over after the death of the character’s original actor, Victor Aaron, in 1996.
The Loss of a Talented Voice
Jonathan Joss died on June 1, 2025, at the age of 59 after being shot and killed near his home in San Antonio, Texas. Police found Joss lying near the roadway and attempted life-saving efforts, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities quickly arrested his neighbor, Sigfredo Ceja Alvarez, who later admitted to the shooting and was charged with first-degree murder. Alvarez was released the following day on $200,000 bond.
Love and Grief: A Husband’s Heartfelt Tribute
Just months before his death, Joss married his partner, Tristan Kern de Gonzales, on Valentine’s Day 2025. In an emotional statement, Kern de Gonzales called Joss “the love of my life,” expressing deep sorrow over the tragic loss.
“He really gave me a lifetime’s worth of love in the short time that we got together,” he told PEOPLE.
Kern de Gonzales has publicly stated his belief that the murder was motivated by hate, citing repeated harassment and homophobic abuse from neighbors.
While police initially said there was no evidence to support that claim, SAPD chief William McManus later walked back that statement during a press conference, suggesting the matter remains under review.
Joss’ Career Beyond King of the Hill
Jonathan Joss wasn’t just known for voicing John Redcorn. He also made an impact in other hit shows and films. Fans will remember his recurring role as Chief Ken Hotate in Parks and Recreation, where he delivered some of the show’s most memorable moments with his dry wit and cultural commentary.
He also appeared in titles like Tulsa King, Ray Donovan, The Magnificent Seven, and True Grit, carving out a respected career in both television and film.
Joss was slated to return as John Redcorn in the King of the Hill revival, making the tribute all the more bittersweet for longtime fans.
Remembering Jonathan Joss
Joss was admired for his ability to bring depth and humor to Indigenous characters on screen, something rarely seen with such consistency in mainstream media. His portrayal of John Redcorn gave Native American representation a meaningful place in animated television—a contribution that won’t be forgotten.
With his passing, the entertainment world loses not just a talented actor, but a figure who helped tell stories that mattered. His voice may be gone, but his impact remains, especially in the animated world he helped shape.
The revival of King of the Hill was always going to be nostalgic—but its tribute to Jonathan Joss adds a layer of heartfelt emotion that resonates deeply with fans. As John Redcorn’s familiar face appears in the final scene alongside Joss himself, the message is clear: he may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
Through laughter, storytelling, and character, Jonathan Joss left behind a legacy that continues to inspire and entertain.
