Legendary Welsh rock musician Dave Edmunds, 81, is currently in critical condition after suffering a major cardiac arrest in late July 2025. The news was shared by his wife, Cici Edmunds, in a heartfelt Facebook post that has moved fans around the world.
Cici, who has been married to Dave for over 40 years, revealed that he “died in my arms” before a nurse managed to revive him with heavy CPR. She described the terrifying experience as traumatic and said she is still in shock. “I believe I have PTSD from the horrific experience,” she shared.
Dave in Intensive Care with Severe Health Complications
After the cardiac arrest, Dave was rushed to the hospital and placed in the intensive care unit (ICU). He was intubated, meaning he is on a machine to help him breathe. Sadly, Cici revealed that Dave has clear brain damage and serious memory loss. His condition remains critical.
Cici shared, “Dave will have a very long journey ahead of him if he survives. We both have. But knowing that there are kind-hearted people like you all makes this tremendously difficult journey a little easier.”
She also expressed deep concern that if he suffers another cardiac arrest, he may not survive. This has made the situation even more emotionally painful and uncertain for the family.
What Is a Cardiac Arrest?
According to the Mayo Clinic, cardiac arrest is the sudden loss of all heart activity due to an irregular heart rhythm. It can cause brain damage in just a few minutes and is often fatal if not treated immediately. In Dave’s case, his survival so far is due to quick CPR from a nearby nurse.
A Look Back at Dave Edmunds’ Music Career
Born on April 14, 1944, in Cardiff, Wales, Dave Edmunds became popular in the 1960s with his first band Love Sculpture. They released two albums before disbanding in 1970. His solo music career took off with the 1972 album Rockpile, which included popular covers of classics like “I Hear You Knocking” and “Outlaw Blues.”
“I Hear You Knocking” spent six weeks at No. 1 in the UK, proving to be a major hit.
Dave later formed another band named Rockpile with well-known musicians like Nick Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Terry Williams. They released the album Seconds of Pleasure in 1980, featuring the popular track “Teacher, Teacher.”
His final release was the 2015 album On Guitar Dave Edmunds: Rags & Classics, which was entirely instrumental.
Retirement and Personal Life
Dave has lived a quiet life since retiring. In 2017, his longtime friend and fellow musician Brian Setzer announced on Facebook that Dave was retiring after a final live performance. “I wish him all the love in the world in his retirement,” Setzer wrote.
