Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes didn’t hold back after the team’s disappointing 2-2 draw against Everton in a preseason friendly in Atlanta.
Labeling parts of the team’s performance as “lazy,” Fernandes raised concerns about attitude and effort—comments that new head coach Ruben Amorim fully supported.
Amorim Backs Fernandes’ Tough Words
Speaking after the match at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Amorim said he was pleased to see his players holding each other accountable. Rather than brushing off the criticism, the Portuguese coach viewed it as a sign that standards are being set and understood inside the dressing room.
“I’m happy for the players to have that feeling,” Amorim said. “It means they know what’s expected. They understand the situation. It’s actually a good thing.”
United’s preseason tour has mostly been positive, but the late draw against Everton served as a wake-up call. With the new season approaching fast, Amorim wants his team to return to Carrington with a mindset focused on improvement.
Bruno Wants More Signings
Fernandes also used the opportunity to point out the need for reinforcements before the summer transfer window closes. He mentioned that he hopes the club can bring in “one or two players more” to help strengthen the squad.
United have already spent around £133 million this window, securing Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo—the latter making his debut against Everton. Still, more additions may be on the horizon. Amorim didn’t dismiss the idea but reminded fans that growth can also come from within the existing squad.
“We can always improve with more players,” Amorim said. “But I also believe in this group. We have the potential to improve and build real competition inside the team.”
Transfer Talks Still Active
One of United’s key targets is RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko. Talks are ongoing, though Newcastle United have also entered the race with a formal offer. United’s recruitment team, led by Jason Wilcox, is working “around the clock,” according to CEO Omar Berrada.
“There are late-night calls and early meetings every day,” Berrada told MUTV. “We’re always trying to find the right opportunities to strengthen the team.”
While fans are eager for more big-name arrivals, Amorim appears focused on creating a team culture that values hard work, discipline, and accountability—an attitude reflected in Fernandes’ blunt criticism.
Manchester United’s preseason may have had promising moments, but the draw against Everton revealed the need for sharper focus and better work ethic.
Bruno Fernandes’ bold comments were not only accepted but supported by coach Ruben Amorim, who is trying to instill a culture of responsibility and improvement at Old Trafford.
As the transfer window winds down, all eyes will be on whether United can bring in more quality—while ensuring the players already in the squad rise to the standard being set by their captain and coach.
