MGK Reveals He Turned Down Sinners Audition Over Racial Slur

Machine Gun Kelly (MGK), the well-known musician and actor, shared an interesting story about a film audition he turned down.

On Thursday, July 31, during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, MGK revealed that he was supposed to audition for a role in the hit movie Sinners, but he declined after discovering that he would be required to say a racial slur in the script.

The 35-year-old artist, whose real name is Colson Baker, talked about his ambitions to act in films, even though he hasn’t appeared in many. “I have a lot of aspirations to be in movies. It just hasn’t panned out that way,” he said. Despite this, he added, “I’m on universal timing, though, so we’ll see,” suggesting that he believes his time will come.

Why MGK Turned Down the Sinners Audition

MGK explained that he was initially interested in auditioning for the role of Bert in Sinners, a film directed by Ryan Coogler. The character of Bert was eventually played by Peter Dreimanis, and the movie is set in 1932 Mississippi.

The plot revolves around identical twin brothers who open a blues nightclub, which takes a dark turn when vampires come into play.

However, MGK made it clear why he walked away from the audition: “In the audition, he has to say the ‘n-word’ and I wouldn’t do it.” For MGK, saying a racial slur on screen was something he just couldn’t do, which led him to decline the opportunity.

MGK’s Acting Ambitions and Humor About Hollywood

Even though he turned down Sinners, MGK expressed that he is still interested in acting. He joked during the show, “Hey, dude. I’d like to be in cinema while I still look young.” He added that he hopes Hollywood will recognize his acting potential, saying, “I would really like to be recruited into a movie while I still got some looks.”

His humorous comments were met with support from Pat McAfee, who even quipped, “We’re part of an Oscar run here.”

Sinners and Its Success

Despite MGK’s decision not to join the film, Sinners became a huge success. Premiering on April 18, the movie earned an impressive $45.6 million during its opening weekend and went on to make over $365 million globally, according to reports from Deadline and Forbes.

It even became the highest-grossing original film since the pandemic and the first horror film in 35 years to receive an A grade from CinemaScore.

The film is currently available for streaming on HBO Max, and also for purchase on Prime Video, Fandango At Home, and Apple TV.
