Fort Lauderdale, Florida – A 25-year-old woman named Beverly Yvonne Slaughter is facing serious criminal charges after a deadly car accident that happened in April.
Police say she was speeding in a Mercedes-Benz, crashed into another car, and then tried to walk away from the scene quietly — because her boyfriend told her to run.
What Happened in the Crash?
The crash took place at around 1 a.m. on April 29 at the busy intersection of West Sunrise Boulevard and NW 24th Avenue in Fort Lauderdale.
Police reports say Slaughter was driving a 2021 Mercedes-Benz S-Class at high speed. As she entered the intersection, a Nissan Altima was making a left turn on a green light. Slaughter’s car smashed into the side of the Altima, badly injuring the people inside.
She Tried to Escape
After the crash, video footage showed Slaughter leaving the car and walking away quietly behind a nearby McDonald’s parking lot.
A police officer spotted her and quickly arrested her. When asked why she ran, she allegedly said, “My boyfriend told me to run.”
Victims and Casualties
There were four people inside the Altima. Two were seriously injured and taken to the hospital. One of them, a woman, was later taken off life support and died on May 2, just a few days after the crash.
Her Troubled Driving Record
Slaughter’s driving history has raised major concerns. She has a long list of past offences, including:
Driving without a valid license
DUI (Driving Under the Influence)
Fleeing from police
Reckless driving
Her license has been suspended since 2021, and she has already been convicted once for driving without a license in 2022.
What Charges Does She Face?
Slaughter has now been charged with 14 different offences, including:
Vehicular homicide
Leaving the scene of a crash involving death
Driving with a suspended license causing death
What the Court Decided
Prosecutors said Slaughter is a danger to public safety and argued that she should not be released on bail. A judge agreed and ordered her to stay in Broward County Jail without bond.
Her next court hearing is scheduled for Friday, where more decisions about her case may be made.
This tragic case highlights the danger of reckless driving and the importance of obeying traffic laws. Authorities believe Slaughter showed a clear disregard for human life, especially by running away after causing such a serious crash.
With a history of dangerous driving, the court has decided that keeping her in custody is necessary to protect the public.
