Laura Dahlmeier, a two-time Olympic gold medalist, tragically passed away in a climbing accident at the age of 31. The retired German biathlete was struck by falling rocks while climbing Laila Peak in Pakistan’s Karakoram mountain range on Monday, as confirmed by her management and the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB).
A Tragic Loss for German Sport
Dahlmeier, who made history at the 2018 Winter Olympics by winning gold in both the sprint and pursuit events, was climbing with her partner, Marina Eva, when the accident occurred. The incident took place around midday local time, and a distress signal was sent out by Eva.
A rescue operation was immediately launched, but adverse weather and low visibility hampered efforts to reach Dahlmeier. The mountainous terrain and the remote location meant that a rescue helicopter could only reach the scene the following morning, making it impossible to save her in time.
In a statement, Thomas Weikert, President of the German Olympic Sports Confederation, expressed his shock and sadness at the loss. “The DOSB and the whole of German sport mourn the loss of Laura Dahlmeier,” Weikert said.
“We are deeply shocked by the sudden and much too early death of this wonderful person. Our thoughts are with her family and friends, and we will offer our support wherever we can.”
A Role Model and Inspiration
Dahlmeier’s legacy extends far beyond her athletic achievements. As a biathlete, she achieved a number of groundbreaking feats, including being the first female biathlete to win both the sprint and pursuit golds at the same Winter Games.
Her success continued at the World Championships, where she made history in 2017 by winning five gold medals in a single event.
After retiring in 2019 at the age of 25, Dahlmeier left an indelible mark on the sport of biathlon. In accordance with Dahlmeier’s wishes, her family made it clear that no one should risk their life to recover her body. The management thanked the local rescue team for their efforts in trying to reach her despite the challenging conditions.
Dahlmeier’s death has deeply affected the sporting world. DOSB President Weikert paid tribute to the Olympian, saying, “Laura Dahlmeier leaves behind a legacy that goes far beyond medals: her dedication to sport, her passion for nature, and her commitment to society make her an inspiring personality.”
He added, “Laura will forever remain an integral part of Team Germany. We will miss her.”
