Tragically, the fire claimed the life of her 7-year-old son. The mother, 31-year-old Kirstin D. Bowers, has been arrested and is now facing serious legal charges.
What Happened During the Fire?
On the afternoon of June 5, 2025, emergency services received a 911 call about a house on fire with a child still trapped inside. The fire broke out at a home on North CR 700 W in Arlington. Firefighters reached the scene quickly and found the house completely covered in flames.
Despite their best efforts, they were unable to save 7-year-old David Bowers Jr., who died inside the home. Three other children managed to escape the fire on their own.
Mother’s Changing Story Raises Suspicion
Kirstin Bowers initially told police that she was smoking in bed and fell asleep. When she woke up, the bed was on fire. She claimed she tried to save her children one by one but could not reach David due to the heavy smoke and flames.
However, investigators later found evidence that didn’t match her story. Surveillance videos and witness statements showed that she had actually walked several blocks away from the home around the time the fire started. After the fire, Bowers tried to change her story again, saying she had returned from her walk before the fire started. However, police say her first 911 call came four minutes after she had already left the house.

A week later, Bowers reportedly searched online for phrases like “Manslaughter sentence Indiana” and “Manslaughter of a child sentence Indiana.” This raised further suspicion that she was aware of the seriousness of the situation.
Husband’s Immediate Reaction and Legal Action
When told about his son’s death, Bowers’ husband told officers to “arrest her.” He filed for divorce shortly after the incident on July 9, 2025.
Bowers has been charged with neglect of a dependent resulting in death. She is currently in jail without bond and is expected to appear in court on July 30, 2025.
