Camp Mystic Survivor Honors Texas Flood Victims with Song — and Meets Lauren Daigle

Skyler Derrington, a 12-year-old girl who survived the Texas flood disaster at Camp Mystic, has gone viral for rewriting the song “Hallelujah” to honor those who lost their lives in the tragedy. After the performance, she got the chance to meet her favorite Christian singer, Lauren Daigle, in an emotional moment.

Skyler Derrington’s Heartfelt Tribute

On July 29, just over three weeks after the tragic flood that claimed 27 lives at Camp Mystic, Skyler and her parents appeared on FOX & Friends in New York City. In a tribute to those who died, Skyler, with help from her mom, Lacey, rewrote Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” to tell her own survival story and to honor the campers and counselors who perished in the flood.

After her emotional performance on TV, Skyler met Lauren Daigle, whose music she has adored since she was a young child. The encounter was an emotional one for both Skyler and Daigle.

Lauren Daigle’s Emotional Reaction

Lauren Daigle, visibly moved by Skyler’s performance, told her, “I saw your video online and I sent it to my family. It made me cry.” Daigle praised Skyler for turning tragedy into something beautiful and inspiring.

“Tragedy happens in so many people’s lives,” Daigle continued. “But you took the tragedy and turned it into something incredible. You turned it into something beautiful.” She went on to commend Skyler’s faith and resilience, adding, “That’s so telling of your faith… and the hope you have in Jesus.”

Skyler, overwhelmed by the praise, shared how much Daigle’s music has meant to her. “I’ve loved all your music and it’s just crazy to meet you,” she said.

Daigle responded by complimenting Skyler’s talent, saying, “When we were standing back there, you did that little run. I looked at my friend, I was like, oh, okay, she’s got it. It’s amazing.”

Skyler’s Strong Faith Through the Tragedy

Despite the heartbreaking tragedy, Skyler continues to lean on her Christian faith. “I’ve always been a Christian and always believe that God is with me no matter what happens,” she shared.

The Texas flood, which occurred on July 4, claimed more than 130 lives, including campers, counselors, and Camp Mystic owner Dick Eastland, who tragically died while trying to save girls from the floodwaters.

Skyler Derrington’s strength, faith, and talent have inspired many, and her tribute to the victims of the Texas flood disaster touched the hearts of many. Meeting Lauren Daigle was a special moment that reminded Skyler—and others—that even in the face of great tragedy, beauty and hope can emerge.
