Sofia Carson continues to honor the memory of her late Descendants costar, Cameron Boyce, six years after his tragic death. Ahead of the release of her new Netflix film, My Oxford Year, Carson took a moment to reflect on their friendship and the lasting impact Boyce had on her life.
A Deep Friendship
Speaking to Vanity Fair, Carson, 30, shared how special Boyce was to her, saying:
“He will forever and ever and ever be one of the most extraordinary people that has ever entered my life.” Carson’s friendship with Boyce dates back to the set of Descendants, where the two became close.
Boyce, who tragically passed away in 2019 at just 20 years old, was a beloved costar, known for his roles in Descendants and Grown Ups. Carson, who was new to fame at 21, remembers Boyce’s support during her early days in the industry.
Transitioning to Fame with Boyce’s Support
Before joining the Descendants franchise, Carson had lived a relatively normal childhood, without the pressures of fame. “I had lived a very normal life. I had had a normal childhood, a normal upbringing,” she shared. She explained how witnessing fame at a young age was a completely different experience for her.
Carson credited Boyce with helping her adjust to her new life in the spotlight. “He became a brother to me and my sister. Him and his family took us in like family when we knew nothing about this industry,” Carson said.
Remembering Cameron Boyce
Boyce’s unexpected death from a seizure in 2019 left the entertainment world in shock. He was just 20 years old. In honor of his memory, the Cameron Boyce Foundation was established to help raise funds for epilepsy research.
Carson, along with Descendants co-stars, continues to pay tribute to Boyce. In July 2024, the foundation hosted an annual gala to raise awareness, drawing in stars like Taylor Lautner and the Descendants cast, marking the five-year anniversary of Boyce’s passing.
A Heartfelt Instagram Tribute
Earlier this month, Carson posted a throwback photo of herself, Boyce, and fellow cast member Booboo Stewart on the anniversary of Boyce’s death. The black-and-white photo was shared on Instagram, with Carson writing in the caption:
“Our Angel. Forever.”
Paying Tribute in Grown Ups 2
Boyce’s legacy is also honored in the movie Happy Gilmore 2, where his Grown Ups co-star Adam Sandler paid tribute to him. In a scene, Boyce’s face can be seen on a TV behind a check-in counter.
