Toronto has officially honoured one of its biggest music stars — The Weeknd — with a weekend celebration and a Key to the City. The award-winning singer, who grew up in Scarborough, a suburb of Toronto, was recognised for his musical success and his dedication to giving back to the community.
The special event took place on Saturday, July 26, just before The Weeknd’s upcoming hometown shows.
A Heartfelt Tribute From the City
Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow praised The Weeknd, whose real name is Abel Tesfaye, saying he represents “the best of our city.” She shared that from his early days in Scarborough to becoming a global music icon, The Weeknd has changed the world of modern R&B and has made a powerful impact both locally and globally.
The honour was given during a private ceremony attended by young people from the Boys & Girls Club of West Scarborough and students from his former school, Birchmount Park Collegiate Institute.
Giving Back to His Roots
Along with receiving the city’s highest honour, The Weeknd is making big contributions to his hometown. He plans to renovate a local basketball court and set up a mobile recording studio for the Boys & Girls Club.
He’s also supporting his former school by building a new dance and arts studio and creating a sensory room for students with developmental disabilities.
The singer said, “I’m deeply honored to receive the Key to the City. It feels good to be home. Toronto is where I found my voice, and I’m committed to helping the next generation find theirs.”
A Record-Breaking Year
The Weeknd’s latest recognition adds to a long list of achievements. Earlier this year, he became the highest-grossing Black male artist to perform at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. With multiple Diamond-certified hits and a unique sound, he continues to break records and win fans around the world.
Since 2020, The Weeknd has donated over $10 million to different humanitarian causes, proving that his success is not only about music but also about making a real difference.
Future of The Weeknd Persona
While he’s hinted at retiring his stage name “The Weeknd” and exploring new creative paths, the artist has made it clear that he’s not done making music. In an interview with Variety earlier this year, he said, “I don’t think I can stop doing that,” but added that he wants to keep challenging himself creatively.
A True Toronto Legend
With this honour, The Weeknd joins a special list of people who’ve been recognized by Toronto for their contributions. His journey from Scarborough to international fame is not just inspiring, but also a reminder of the power of hard work, talent, and staying connected to one’s roots.
