The Los Angeles Rams have started their 2025 training camp at Loyola Marymount University, but their star quarterback, Matthew Stafford, is currently not practicing due to back soreness. While it’s not a serious injury, the team is being extra cautious with the 37-year-old veteran as the new NFL season approaches.
Stafford’s Back Pain Keeps Him Off the Field
Head Coach Sean McVay confirmed that Stafford is not expected to return to practice on Monday, as originally planned. He said that although there was no new injury, they should have marked Stafford’s condition as week-to-week from the beginning.
“Matthew’s feeling good,” McVay explained. “It’s not something new, just something he’s dealt with before. We’re taking a smart approach, like we did in the offseason.”
McVay also added that Stafford will train separately on the side to stay in shape, and the team hopes to have him ready by Week 1 on September 7 when the Rams play against the Houston Texans.
Who Will Step Up in Stafford’s Absence?
With Stafford taking a break, this gives other quarterbacks a chance to shine during training camp. Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett are expected to handle most of the reps, while Dresser Winn could also get some time on the field.
This is a great opportunity for the Rams’ backup quarterbacks to show their skills and possibly lock in the No. 2 spot on the depth chart behind Stafford.
Stafford’s Performance Last Season
Stafford had a solid 2024 season. He led the Rams to a 10-6 record, threw for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 8 interceptions. He was especially strong toward the end of the season, throwing 15 touchdowns and just 1 interception in his final nine games, including the playoffs.
The Rams came very close to defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round, falling just 22 yards short. Had they won, they would’ve likely hosted the NFC Championship Game.
With 59,809 career passing yards and 377 touchdowns, Stafford ranks among the top 10 in NFL history in both stats. He also has 49 game-winning drives, placing him fifth all-time.
Rams Taking No Risks Ahead of Super Bowl Push
For the Rams, it’s a Super Bowl or nothing this year. So it makes sense that the team is being careful with Stafford’s health. With this being his 17th NFL season, the goal is to make sure he’s 100% ready — mentally, physically, and emotionally — when it really matters.
Fans can expect more updates in the coming weeks, but as of now, things seem under control, and Stafford is still expected to start in Week 1.
