Florida Man Stabs Neighbor on Oxygen in Unprovoked Attack: Police Say

Deerfield Beach, FLPaul Anthony Vargas Arana is accused of attempted murder after stabbing his neighbor on July 19, in an unprovoked attack at an apartment complex in Deerfield Beach. The incident occurred in the middle of the day, around 11:30 a.m., when police responded to a report of a stabbing.

The Attack

According to the probable cause arrest affidavit, when officers arrived at the scene, they found the victim suffering from a stab wound to his upper left chest. The victim, who was on oxygen due to COPD, was quickly rushed to the hospital by paramedics.

Doctors discovered that the knife had punctured his lung, causing internal bleeding. Fortunately, the victim was later reported to be in stable condition.

The Incident

Detectives learned that the victim had been returning home from shopping and lunch when the attack took place. As the victim and his wife were walking toward their apartment, Vargas Arana suddenly came running down the stairs, wearing surgical gloves and holding a makeshift knife with blades welded onto it. Without warning or provocation, Vargas Arana allegedly stabbed the victim.

The victim, in pain, reportedly said, “Paulie, why are you doing this?” as he began to fight back. His wife ran inside to grab a metal pipe, returning to strike Vargas Arana in the head. Police deputies arrived shortly after and pulled Vargas Arana off the victim.
