A tragic shooting incident occurred in January 2024 in the parking lot of a Costco in Tukwila, Washington, which resulted in the death of 67-year-old Yuam Ming. The shooting was part of a robbery attempt, and 20-year-old Salman Haji was allegedly involved.
After evading capture and fleeing to Kenya, Haji has now been apprehended and deported back to the U.S., where he faces serious charges for his role in the crime.
The Shooting Incident
The horrific incident occurred when Yuam Ming and her sister were in the Costco parking lot, finishing up their grocery shopping. As they loaded their car, Haji and another suspect, Ilyiss Abdi, allegedly attacked them in an attempt to steal Ming’s purse.
During the struggle, Ming reportedly tried to protect her sister but was shot by Haji.
Surveillance footage from the Costco parking lot showed the two suspects attacking the victims during the robbery attempt. Prior to this, other surveillance footage revealed that Haji and Abdi were seen in a nearby grocery store, seemingly planning the attack.
It was later uncovered that the two suspects had stolen a vehicle earlier in the day in a separate carjacking incident.
The Carjacking
Before the attack at Costco, Haji was involved in a carjacking in Seattle on Queen Anne Hill. Authorities say that Haji followed a woman in her car, rear-ended her to make her stop, and then demanded her car keys and money.
After threatening her with a gun, Haji stole her Porsche Cayenne, which was later used in the robbery attempt at the Costco parking lot.
Haji’s Escape to Kenya
After the shooting, Haji managed to escape the U.S. and fled to Kenya, evading arrest for some time. His whereabouts were initially unknown, but after a thorough investigation, law enforcement tracked him down. The U.S. Attorney’s Office confirmed that Haji was deported from Kenya and taken into FBI custody.
Legal Action and Charges
In June 2024, Salman Haji was indicted on charges of murder and attempted robbery. Federal prosecutors have confirmed that he will be held accountable for his alleged actions.
U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman emphasized the importance of justice in the case, noting that Haji’s arrest is a crucial step in ensuring that he faces the consequences of his actions.
Haji’s deportation and subsequent arrest are significant developments in the ongoing investigation into the tragic death of Yuam Ming. Although the investigation continues, Haji will now stand trial for his alleged involvement in the crime.
A Call for Justice
This case underscores the critical importance of justice, even when suspects attempt to flee the country to avoid responsibility. It also highlights the profound impact that violent crimes have on innocent victims and their families.
As the case progresses, it serves as a reminder of the ongoing pursuit of justice, regardless of the lengths to which suspects may go to evade it.
