If you’re a senior driver in Virginia, it’s important to be aware of the specific rules surrounding license renewals. While younger drivers renew their licenses every 8 years, seniors 75 and older have different requirements. Here’s everything you need to know to ensure your renewal process goes smoothly.
Renewal Frequency
For Drivers Under 75: License renewals are required every 8 years.
For Drivers Aged 75 and Older: Renewals must occur every 5 years.
How to Renew
In-Person Renewal: Drivers 75 and older must renew their licenses in person at a Virginia DMV customer service center or DMV Connect location. Unfortunately, online and mail renewals are not available for this age group.
Vision Test: Seniors 75 and older are required to pass a vision screening each time they renew their license. Alternatively, you can submit a report from a licensed vision specialist.
Photo: A new photo will be taken as part of the renewal process for those 75 and older.
Fees: The standard renewal fee is $32.
Additional Testing
No Road or Written Test: There are no automatic road or written tests required solely because of age. However, the DMV may require testing if there are concerns about a driver’s fitness to drive.
Notification and Required Documents
Renewal Notice: You will receive a renewal notice from the DMV before your license expires, which will provide important details regarding your renewal.
Required Documents: Bring the necessary identification and, if applicable, any vision documentation if you’re using your own provider for the eye exam.
Other Considerations
Medical Information or Testing: If there are safety concerns regarding a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle, the DMV may require additional medical information or testing, regardless of age.
Safety Concerns: Family members, police, or medical professionals can report concerns to the DMV regarding a senior driver’s fitness. The DMV may take action if safety issues are raised.
Once you turn 75, you must renew your driver’s license in person every 5 years. Each renewal will include a vision screening and a new photo. While there are no automatic road tests, the DMV may intervene if safety concerns are reported.
