Shreveport, La. – Dangerous heat is set to blanket parts of Texas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana on Sunday, with feels-like temperatures soaring to 109°F in some areas between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. The National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Heat Advisory for dozens of counties across the ArkLaTex region.
Heat Advisory Issued
The advisory covers several areas, including Gregg, Rusk, and Angelina counties in East Texas, Sevier and Howard counties in Southwest Arkansas, McCurtain County in Southeast Oklahoma, and nearly all of northern Louisiana.
Cities like Longview, Nacogdoches, and Lufkin in Texas, as well as De Queen, Idabel, and El Dorado, are expected to experience sweltering humidity and high temperatures.
Health Risks and Precautions
Officials warn that the combination of high heat and high humidity will significantly increase the risk for heat-related illnesses, especially during the hottest part of the day. The public is advised to:
Stay indoors and hydrate frequently, especially during peak heat hours from noon to 6 p.m.
Avoid strenuous activities and try to stay in air-conditioned spaces.
Check on vulnerable neighbors like the elderly and those with health conditions.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and take frequent breaks in shaded or cool areas.
Be aware of signs of heat exhaustion, including dizziness, nausea, and rapid heartbeat. If these symptoms appear, it’s crucial to seek shade or air conditioning immediately.
Duration of the Advisory
The Heat Advisory will remain in effect through 8 p.m. Sunday, but additional alerts may be issued if hot conditions persist into the following week. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and monitor weather updates for any changes.
