110°F Heat Index in Central Florida — Are You Ready for Dangerous Heat Today?

Orlando, Fla.Brutal heat will blanket much of Central and West-Central Florida today, with heat index values soaring as high as 110°F from noon to 6 p.m., triggering a widespread heat advisory across dozens of counties.

Heat Advisory Issued

The National Weather Service offices in Tampa and Melbourne have issued a heat advisory for Pinellas and Hillsborough counties on the Gulf Coast, and Volusia and Brevard counties on the Atlantic side. Cities under alert include Tampa, Orlando, Lakeland, Kissimmee, and Daytona Beach.

Health Risks and Precautions

The combination of soaring temperatures and stifling humidity can cause heat-related illnesses, especially for those working or exercising outdoors. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke are serious risks, and officials urge the public to take precautions.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends outdoor workers to take frequent shaded breaks, stay hydrated, and avoid peak afternoon hours (noon to 6 p.m.).

In Tampa, residents may experience the highest heat index of the summer so far, with the urban heat effect making it even more intense in areas like Polk, Highlands, and Orange counties. Inland areas are particularly vulnerable to heat retention, which amplifies the effects.

Beachgoer and Visitor Warnings

In Volusia and Brevard counties, beachgoers are advised to avoid direct sun exposure and stay alert for signs of heat exhaustion. Remember to stay under shade, wear light clothing, and use sunscreen.

Heat Advisory Duration

The heat advisory is expected to remain in effect until 6 p.m. today, but further alerts could be issued if the high humidity continues into the workweek. The public is encouraged to stay safe and avoid unnecessary exposure to extreme heat.
