Jimmy Fallon’s Met Gala Look Was Almost Ruined by Chanel Under-Eye Patches—Here’s What Happened

Jimmy Fallon and Natasha Lyonne may have looked stylish at the 2025 Met Gala, but behind the scenes, Lyonne played a key role in saving Fallon from a potential fashion faux pas on the red carpet.

The two stars reminisced about the event during the July 17 episode of The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, sharing details about their interactions before stepping onto the Met Gala carpet.

The Chanel Under-Eye Patches Incident

The story began when Fallon showed Lyonne a picture of himself helping her with her dress train while they were walking up the iconic stairs of The Metropolitan Museum of Art. This picture sparked Lyonne to recall a moment that could have resulted in a red carpet disaster.

“You pulled out from your little breast pocket some Chanel under-eye baggage strap-on things, and it seemed like an eccentric move. And you said, ‘Should I put these on for the carpet?'” Lyonne recalled.

Fallon, always looking for a good laugh, continued, “I pulled them out and I go, ‘Hey do you want to help me out? I want to put these on. Do you wanna help me? Can you put these on?’ I thought it’d be funny.”

Lyonne’s Friendly Intervention

As much as Fallon was ready to embrace the eccentric look, Lyonne wasn’t about to let him make a fashion mistake at the biggest fashion event of the year. Lyonne, who has been friends with Fallon for over 20 years, stepped in with some tough love.

“I responsibly, as a good friend of 20-plus years, said, ‘Jimmy, you’ve gone nuts. What are you doing? You don’t need this,'” she recalled with a laugh. “You don’t need to live this hard, baby. You want it too much. Why are you even going to this many fashion events that you’re carrying travel, to-go-sized Chanel?”

The Reason Behind Fallon’s Fashion Statement

Fallon’s idea to wear the Chanel under-eye patches was a playful attempt at making a fashion statement, especially since the luxury brand doesn’t create menswear styles. Fallon explained, “I was lucky enough to be asked to sit at the Chanel table.

They don’t make men’s clothes… but I figured it’d be funny if I wore these Chanel under-eye things, so then I could go on the red carpet and they go, ‘Uh, who are you wearing?'”

Despite Fallon’s comedic reasoning, Lyonne stepped in to save her friend from what could have been a very memorable, but not quite in a good way, fashion moment.

Met Gala Looks

The 2025 Met Gala took place on May 5 in New York City, with the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” to celebrate the opening of the museum’s exhibit of the same name.

The dress code for the evening was “Tailored for You.” Fallon went for a sleek custom navy blue tuxedo from Zegna, while Lyonne stunned in a lavender McQueen gown that exuded elegance.

Fallon and Lyonne’s playful banter, combined with their sharp looks, made them one of the most talked-about duos of the night. But it’s clear that, for Fallon, Lyonne was the true fashion savior of the evening.
