Washington Commanders are making a significant move to bolster their pass rush by signing Von Miller, the former Super Bowl MVP and one of the most accomplished pass rushers of his generation.
Miller, who spent the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, announced on social media Wednesday that he plans to join Washington for a one-year deal, as reported by CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones.
A New Chapter in Von Miller’s Career
At 36 years old, Miller enters his 16th NFL season with Washington, aiming to capture his third Super Bowl title after a stellar career that has included wins with the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Rams.
Miller’s signing comes after Washington’s narrow miss last season, as they were just one win away from a Super Bowl appearance, losing to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game.
Von Miller’s Time with the Buffalo Bills
Miller’s previous tenure with the Buffalo Bills saw mixed results. Released by Buffalo in March to clear $8 million in cap space, Miller had a solid season in 2024, recording 17 tackles and 6 sacks.
However, his year was interrupted by a four-game suspension for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. Despite the suspension, his presence as an edge rusher was still impactful when he was on the field.
A Prolific Career
Miller is widely regarded as one of the top edge rushers in NFL history. The No. 2 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft by the Denver Broncos, Miller has accumulated 129.5 sacks, ranking 16th all-time.
He has been named to eight Pro Bowls and earned three first-team All-Pro selections. Miller’s crowning achievement came when he was named Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl 50 with the Broncos, and he later added another Super Bowl ring with the Rams in Super Bowl LVI.
Miller’s Determination to Keep Playing
Though Miller was not immediately signed at the start of the free agency period, he made it clear in May that he wasn’t done with football yet. “I got this year on the books for sure,” Miller said at the time.
“I’m going to play this coming up season, just got to find a team to play on.” His determination to play at least one more year has now been realized with the Commanders.
Washington’s Rising Momentum
The Washington Commanders are coming off a strong 2024 season, where they posted a 12-5 record and won a playoff game for the first time since 2005. The addition of Miller gives them another edge rusher to complement their defense, adding even more potential to a team with rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels leading them forward.
With Miller’s veteran leadership and playmaking ability, Washington is hoping he can be the difference-maker they need to push even further this season and finally reach their Super Bowl goal.
