Air Quality Alert in Connecticut Breathing Problems Expected Due to High Ozone Levels

Torrington, Conn.Residents of Litchfield County are being urged to take precautions on Wednesday as unhealthy ozone levels prompt an Air Quality Action Day.

The alert is in effect for Torrington, Oakville, New Milford, and surrounding communities, where ground-level ozone concentrations are expected to approach or exceed unhealthy standards from 11 a.m. until 11 p.m. Wednesday.

Health Risks and Recommendations

According to the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection, ozone pollution is expected to cause health issues for sensitive groups, including children, seniors, and individuals with respiratory conditions. Ozone exposure can lead to breathing difficulties, coughing, and exacerbate asthma symptoms.

Sensitive groups are advised to limit outdoor activity and avoid strenuous exercise during the peak ozone hours, especially from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.

People in Gaylordsville, Terryville, and Thomaston, as well as commuters and outdoor workers, should reduce time spent outside and consider carpooling or using public transit to help reduce emissions.

Precautionary Measures

Air conditioners with clean filters should be used to keep indoor air cool and clean, and windows should be kept closed.

Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged during the alert.

Residents can monitor air quality levels and find real-time updates on the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection website at ct.gov/deep/aqi.

Ongoing Monitoring

The Air Quality Alert is in effect until 11 p.m. Wednesday, and further advisories may be issued if ozone levels remain elevated. This alert serves as a reminder of ongoing concerns about summer ozone pollution and its potential impacts on public health.
