Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. made a rare public appearance together, turning heads at the premiere of the latest I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel.
The beloved couple, known for their roles in the original 1997 slasher hit, walked the red carpet hand in hand at the United Theater on Broadway in Los Angeles on Monday, July 14.
A Stunning Red Carpet Moment
Gellar, 48, was a showstopper in an Oscar de la Renta strapless mini dress featuring delicate butterfly embroidery in shades of baby blue, navy blue, and bright orange.
She paired the dress with an orange leather geometric clutch, pointed-toe pumps, and accessorized with a tennis bracelet, silver fan earrings, and a statement diamond ring on her right hand, completing the look with her signature elegance.
Prinze, 49, kept things casual but stylish in a relaxed navy blue linen suit worn over a white shirt. He completed the ensemble with black leather loafers, coordinating effortlessly with his wife’s look.
A Walk Down Memory Lane
This event marked a nostalgic moment for the couple, who first attended the premiere of the original I Know What You Did Last Summer nearly 20 years ago. Back in October 1997, Gellar and Prinze walked the red carpet separately at the GCC Galaxy Theatre in Hollywood, epitomizing late-90s style.
At that time, they were just beginning their romance, which would later blossom into marriage.
The two met on the set of the original I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Prinze once again returns to the franchise in the sequel, reprising his role as Ray Bronson alongside Jennifer Love Hewitt, who also returns as Julie James.
Returning to the Role: Prinze Reflects on His Experience
In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Prinze shared how returning to his iconic role felt like a “high school reunion,” filled with both excitement and anticipation. “You have no idea what’s changed, what’s the same,” he said.
“You’re excited to show what you think you’re better at… you hope they notice it. It was all those things.” Fans of the franchise are eager to see how his portrayal has evolved in this new installment.
Gellar’s Absence on Screen
Though Gellar was present for the premiere, fans shouldn’t expect to see her in the new movie. In a statement to PEOPLE, Gellar revealed that her character, Helen Shivers, does not make it through the first film. “I am dead,” she joked, confirming her absence in the sequel.
Helen’s death in the original movie was one of the pivotal moments of the first film, and her character’s absence in the new movie is a significant part of the storyline.
What to Expect from the New Movie
The sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer picks up after a deadly car accident caused by five friends, who cover up their involvement and make a pact to keep their secret. A year later, their past comes back to haunt them as a mysterious figure seeks revenge.
The friends are stalked by a killer, and as the tension rises, they turn to two survivors from the legendary Southport Massacre of 1997 for help.
Fans of the original film can expect suspense, thrills, and plenty of twists as the story continues. I Know What You Did Last Summer debuts in theaters on Friday, July 18.
