An Oklahoma mother, Spencer Brennan, 33, has been arrested for the tragic death of her 3-month-old son, Rory Kelson, after allegedly falling asleep while heavily intoxicated on White Claw hard seltzers while co-sleeping with her twins.
The incident, which occurred last November, led to charges of second-degree murder following an investigation by the Oklahoma City Police Department.
The Tragic Incident
On November 2, 2024, at approximately 7:15 a.m., officers responded to a 911 call at a residence in Oklahoma City. The father of the twins, who made the call, reported finding his son unresponsive at his wife’s feet while she was asleep on the couch.
When emergency responders arrived, they noted that the infant was warm to the touch but not breathing. Rory was rushed to OU Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An autopsy later revealed that the most probable cause of death was “asphyxia due to an unsafe sleep environment.” The medical examiner determined that the baby had likely become trapped between the back and bottom cushions of the couch while co-sleeping with his mother.
Alcohol Consumption and the Incident
According to investigators, the night before the tragic event, both Spencer Brennan and her husband consumed alcohol. The couple had shared a 12-pack of White Claw Hard Seltzer, and later, Spencer purchased four additional “tall boy” White Claws, which are nearly 20 ounces each. After drinking, she allegedly fell asleep on the couch with her twins nearby.
In an interview with police, Spencer reportedly stated that after purchasing the additional alcohol, she sat down on the couch, drank, and fell asleep. She claimed not to remember anything that happened afterward due to being “probably really drunk.” Spencer admitted, “I mean, I was drunk enough to just need to pass out.”
Investigation Findings
The authorities found three empty “tall boy” White Claws in the trash, which further corroborated Spencer’s admission of excessive drinking. A child abuse examiner noted that Spencer’s high level of intoxication likely contributed to her inability to care for her children properly.
The examiner stated that had Spencer placed the baby in his bassinet instead of co-sleeping with him, the risk of an unsafe sleep environment would have been greatly reduced, and the child might still be alive.
Arrest and Legal Charges
Spencer Brennan was arrested on July 1, 2025, and charged with second-degree murder in the death of her son. She is currently being held at the Cleveland County Jail, with her bond set at $500,000. Brennan’s next court appearance is scheduled for August 5, 2025.
The Impact on the Family
The heartbreaking incident has left the family devastated. Rory’s death has sparked discussions about the dangers of co-sleeping, particularly while under the influence of alcohol, and the importance of ensuring safe sleep environments for infants.
