Deion Sanders, the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes football team, is putting the focus squarely on his team, not his personal health issues. Speaking at the Big 12 media day on July 9, Sanders, 57, politely declined to answer questions about his health, which had previously kept him away from the field.
When a reporter asked about his health, Sanders responded humorously, saying, “So, I’m really not gon’ tell you much. You know that,” as laughter was heard from the room. He added, “I’m not here to talk about my health. I’m here to talk about my team.”
Focusing on the Team, Not Personal Struggles
Sanders emphasized his positive outlook and how he’s focusing on his role as a coach, saying, “Average day I’m looking good. I’m living lovely. God has truly blessed me. Not a care in the world. Not a want or a desire in the world.”
When asked about his time on “the ranch,” Sanders responded with optimism, reinforcing his commitment to his work and his role at Colorado-Boulder, stating, “I’m already back…I’m here today. I’m handling my responsibilities.”
Sanders also expressed his excitement about reconnecting with his players, saying, “Some of the young [players] I haven’t even met yet. I’m so excited about that.”
Health Issues in the Past and Current Situation
In March 2022, Sanders revealed that he had to have two toes on his left foot amputated due to blood clots in his legs. Sanders had been open about his health struggles, sharing his experiences via social media and the Coach Prime docuseries. Despite these challenges, Sanders remained focused on his recovery and his work as a coach.
In June 2025, Deion Sanders Jr., his eldest son, hinted in a YouTube livestream that his father was dealing with a health issue, though he didn’t elaborate further. Sanders Jr. assured viewers that his father was “feeling well” and would share more details when ready.
In response, Sanders expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support he received. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to reassure fans, saying, “Everything is OKAY and will continue to be so. God got me like no other. I have so much more work to do to Glorify God so please believe God got me!”
Missed Events and Commitment to Team
Sanders had to miss several events earlier in the year, including a sickle cell disease symposium in Florida in June, which he canceled due to a scheduling conflict. NBA legend Magic Johnson filled in for him. Additionally, Sanders was unable to attend the wedding of Travis Hunter, a Colorado star and 2024 Heisman Trophy winner, in May.
Despite the setbacks, Sanders remains focused on his coaching duties and is eager to return to work with his team and staff at Colorado.
