Flash Flood Risk in Central and Southeast Virginia Due to Heavy Rain

Central and southeast Virginia is facing a renewed flash flood risk today as heavy rain and already saturated ground raise concerns of flooding.

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Flood Watch for the region, warning residents and drivers to stay alert as downpours continue to trigger potential flooding through late Thursday night.

Flood Watch in Effect

A Flood Watch is in place for over 40 counties in Virginia, including areas from Richmond and Hopewell south to Emporia and east toward the Northern Neck and Maryland’s lower Eastern Shore.

The watch follows 2 to 6 inches of rain that fell in the last 48 hours, with an additional 2 to 3 inches expected in some areas due to localized thunderstorms. This significant rainfall has already left the ground saturated, increasing the risk of flash floods.

High-Risk Areas

Certain areas are at a higher risk of flooding, including Prince Edward, Goochland, New Kent, Brunswick, and James City counties. Low-lying roads and small creeks in these areas are likely to overflow.

In the Richmond metro area, flooding is most likely in flood-prone zones such as Midlothian Turnpike, Broad Rock Boulevard, and areas near the James River. Drivers in these locations should be particularly cautious as conditions can change rapidly.

Safety Tips for Drivers and Residents

If you’re driving in the affected areas, it’s crucial to take the following precautions:

Avoid low-water crossings: Never attempt to drive through flooded roads, as even shallow water can cause vehicles to stall or be swept away.

Stay alert: Be aware of possible road closures and detours due to flooding.

Secure valuables: If you live in flood-prone areas, make sure your valuables are moved to higher ground, and be ready to act quickly if flood warnings are issued.

The National Weather Service also recommends that residents keep an eye on local weather updates and warnings. Scattered storms may continue through the night, but conditions are expected to improve by Friday morning.
