A tragic house fire in San Marino, California, which initially appeared to be an accident, has been determined to be a murder, and prosecutors have charged the victim’s estranged husband, Yoon Lai, 62, with murder and arson.
Dr. Irene Gaw-Gonzalo, 56, was found dead in the fire at the couple’s home on January 6, 2024, but an investigation has revealed that she was likely murdered by Lai, with the fire being an attempt to cover up the crime.
The Fire and Initial Investigation
On the morning of January 6, a fire broke out at the couple’s home, and Dr. Gaw-Gonzalo’s body was discovered on the doorstep, severely burned. Given the extent of the burns, the medical examiner was unable to immediately determine the cause of death.
