Gaylord, MI – Northern Michigan is experiencing pleasant weather for the start of the beach week, with sunshine and low wave risks making it ideal for swimming.
However, beachgoers heading to Lake Michigan over the July 4th weekend should prepare for changing weather conditions and increased swim hazards, especially by Saturday.
Thursday and Friday: A Nice Start
The National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord reports mostly sunny skies and low swim risks for Lake Huron and Lake Michigan today and Thursday, with high temperatures reaching the low- to mid-80s.
The good news for beachgoers is that the weather on July 4th is expected to remain mainly dry, perfect for a sunny day at the beach.
Friday Night Into Saturday: Storms and Swim Risks Increase
The forecast shifts as storm chances rise Friday night into Saturday, bringing greater risks for swimmers, particularly on Lake Michigan. On Saturday, highs are expected to reach the upper 80s to low 90s, with wave heights between 1 to 3 feet and a moderate swim risk, meaning swimming is discouraged.
Sunday: Storms and Lower Swim Risks
The stormy weather will continue into Sunday, with active conditions in the morning. However, the good news is that swim risks will drop back to low levels, and wave heights will ease to between 0–2 feet, making the conditions safer for swimming later in the day.
Safety Tips for Beachgoers
The NWS is urging beachgoers to practice Great Lakes water safety, such as avoiding swimming near piers and knowing how to respond if caught in a rip current. It’s essential not to underestimate inland wave activity, particularly when storms are in the forecast.
