Marquette, Mich. – Swimmers in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula are being urged to stay out of the water on Friday as dangerous waves and rip currents create a moderate swim risk at beaches in Schoolcraft, Marquette, and Alger counties.
Dangerous Conditions at Popular Beaches
According to the National Weather Service in Marquette, hazardous conditions are expected all day, especially at popular spots such as Lakeview Park in Manistique, McCarty’s Cove in Marquette, and areas near Grand Marais Harbor.
Breaking waves and unpredictable currents will make the shoreline dangerous, particularly near piers, break walls, and river outlets.
High-Risk Areas
In Schoolcraft County, the highest-risk locations include Lakeview Park and Seul Choix Point. In Marquette and Alger Counties, unsafe water conditions are expected at Middle Bay, Au Train Bay, and along parts of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, including Grand Sable Dunes and Miners Beach.
Safety Recommendations
Only experienced swimmers should consider entering the water. Officials strongly recommend avoiding these areas, especially for families with children or pets, and staying away from water near structures or river mouths.
The swim risk is expected to continue through the evening, and additional alerts may be issued if wave conditions worsen.
