Pittsburgh, Pa. – Dangerous heat continues to affect residents across the Ohio Valley through Friday evening, with heat index values nearing 100°F and little relief expected overnight.
According to the National Weather Service in Pittsburgh, a Heat Advisory remains in effect until 8 p.m. Friday for parts of eastern Ohio, southwestern Pennsylvania, and the northern panhandle of West Virginia.
Daytime temperatures will reach the upper 80s and 90s, and when combined with high humidity, it will feel like triple digits. The highest heat indices are expected between noon and 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday.
Cities Affected by the Heat Advisory
Cities under the advisory include New Philadelphia, Steubenville, Wheeling, Morgantown, Zanesville, and Kittanning. Overnight lows above 70°F will offer little relief, which increases the risk of cumulative heat stress, especially for vulnerable groups like seniors and young children.
Storms and Heat Risks
While short bursts of afternoon storms could bring brief cool-downs to isolated areas, widespread heat risks will persist. Health officials are urging residents to take precautions:
- Limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day.
- Stay hydrated and avoid strenuous activities.
- Check on neighbors, particularly those without air conditioning.
- Wear lightweight clothing and try to plan outdoor activities for the early morning or evening when it’s cooler.
Cooling Centers and Local Resources
Cooling centers may be available in some affected counties. Local emergency managers recommend checking municipal websites for information on available resources.
Extended Heat Advisories Possible
If the heat conditions continue, heat advisories may be extended. Residents should stay tuned to the National Weather Service or local media for further updates on the situation.
