Duluth, Minnesota – Severe storms and large hail are expected to impact north-central Minnesota, starting late Friday night and continuing into the weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Duluth, a Level 1 (Marginal) risk for severe storms will develop in areas such as Bemidji, Grand Rapids, and Brainerd late Friday. The primary threat from these storms will be large hail. While storms are expected to weaken by early Saturday, a renewed risk of strong to severe thunderstorms is likely later in the day and into Sunday.
Cities like International Falls, Ely, and Hibbing are on the edge of the storm zone, while Duluth may experience thunderstorms as conditions change. Residents in these areas are encouraged to secure outdoor items and keep an eye on weather alerts, especially overnight when storms can be harder to notice.
Drivers traveling along U.S. Highways 2 and 71 Friday night into Saturday morning should remain weather-aware.
Potential for Heavy Rainfall and Weekend Disruptions
This storm system marks a shift from the drier conditions that were experienced earlier in the week. In addition to the threat of large hail, locally heavy rainfall is possible. Those in vulnerable areas should prepare for potential disruptions over the weekend, including power outages.
Severe storm potential will persist through Sunday, and additional watches or warnings may be issued as the situation evolves.
