Could Stephen Curry Play in the NBA Until He’s 40? His Father Weighs In

Whenever Stephen Curry decides to retire from the NBA, it’s safe to say a call from the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame won’t be far behind.

The four-time NBA champion and two-time MVP celebrated his 37th birthday in March, marking another milestone in his illustrious career. This fall, Curry will begin his 17th season with the Golden State Warriors—the only team he’s ever played for. But don’t expect the sharpshooting guard to step away from the game just yet.

Dell Curry, Stephen’s father and former NBA player, believes that his son has the ability to play in the league “well into his 40s.”

Dell Curry’s Confidence in Stephen’s Longevity

“I think it’ll be his decision when to walk away,” Dell Curry told PFSN. “A lot of guys play until the teams or the league tell you, ‘We can’t use your services anymore.’

I think he could be well into his 40s because he can shoot the ball and requires that you have to guard him. That’ll create space for other players on the floor. So, I think that decision will be totally up to him.”

Stephen Curry’s Record-Breaking Career

Curry has set numerous NBA records during his storied career, most notably as the league’s all-time 3-point leader. His unmatched long-range shooting has revolutionized the game, and his influence on the sport is undeniable.

A Legacy in San Francisco

While Curry’s playing future is still in his hands, he has made it clear that he hopes to finish his career with the Golden State Warriors. His commitment to the team has been unwavering, and his father highlighted Stephen’s competitive drive as a key factor in his ability to maintain a high level of play for several more years.

“He still has those competitive juices — those are far from leaving him,” Dell Curry said. “He has the game, the will, so it’s up to him. Obviously, he’s 37, so we’re not talking six or eight years, but he has many, several years left at this ability to play in the league.”

Looking Ahead

The Warriors recently advanced to the Western Conference Finals, and Curry’s contract with the team expires after the 2025-2026 season. While Curry’s time in the league may eventually come to a close, his father is confident that there are still many years of elite basketball ahead of him.
